There's nothing better than to curl up with a good book, especially if the weather is gross!
Even if I've had a hard day working, I can unwind in bed with a book and read as little as a paragraph, or a whole chapter and I can garantee myself a really good nights sleep!

I'm just looking at a little woven basket made of thin cardboard, and a battered and bent hen, made of the same material, sitting inside.
I remembered when my youngest son proudly, brought it home from school.  It was his first Easter and this was his little gift for me.  Inside the basket, were four sugarcoated sweets, resembling eggs, nestling on cotton wool and the mother hen sitting on top of them. The sweets and cotton wool have long gone and the basket and hen really do look the worse for wear. I still have some pottery which my youngest daughter made  at school, the 'owl and the pussycat' and a small vase, which I keep my pens and pencils in it still.
I also have a calender which one of my grandsons made.  It had some crepe flowers and rosebuds glued on to it, but over the years, they have also come adrift.
All these precious gifts of paintings, drawings, etc. I wish I could have kept them all.  Unfortunately, through the ravages of time they have been lost, or picked up and thrown away.
I think all parents would agree with me that these are little treasures, quite priceless to us but, maybe rubbish to other people.

Books - I really do love 'em!  I find that I'm never alone when I have a book.  It's a great companion. And there are so many too choose from:  detective stories, whodunits, romance, classics, travel, religion, political, pirates, ships, navy, war, sci-fi, super natural.   You can purchase books from online bookshops and browse in comfort in your own home.  I'm sure that even in this economic climate, there are books at very reasonable prices from discount book stores.  I often visit the public library where they sell off their old stock and I have bought quite a few cheap school books for my family.

GODS FROM CHINESE MYTHOLOGY

The ancient Chinese myth of the Herd Boy and Weaver Girl constellations Aquila and Lyra.

Orphaned  Herd Boy was tending water buffalo by the banks of an earthly stream, when seven maidens descended from Heaven to bathe in the stream.  These maidens are Celestral Weaving Girls whose job it is to weave the clothing worn by the gods in heaven.

Hiding in the reeds, the Herd Boy, smitten by the youngest weaver girl, had stolen her gown so that she would be unable to return to heaven with the others.  As the quaint local custom states that as he had seen her unclothed, he must marry her  So by taking her gown the Herd Boy marries a beautiful wife.

The Weaver Girl and the Herd Boy were married and were very happy together.  The Weaving Girl gave birth to a boy and girl.

The Heavenly Gods in Heaven were unhappy that one of the Weaving Goddesses was living on earth with a Herd Boy, so her grandfather, the High God, sent his guards to bring her back to Heaven by force.  This they did, whilst her husband and children stood crying and helpless.  But help was close at hand in the form of the water buffalo. Miserably the Herd Boy walked into the water buffalo's shed to see to its needs.  Suddenly the buffalo spoke, frightening the stuffing out of the Herd Boy,  He told the Herd Boy that it was in his power to reunite him with his dearly beloved wife.  He went on to say that as soon as he, the buffalo, died, the Herd Boy was to remove the hide, then wrap it around himself   As soon as the buffalo had finished speaking, he fell down dead!!  The Herd Boy was mortified for he had looked on the buffalo as a friend, but immediately, he commenced to remove the hide from the beast. When he had finished he wrapped the hide around him and put a carrying pole across his shoulders, with a basket at each end.  Placing his son in one of the baskets and his daughter in the other.  As his daughter was lighter than her brother, the father placed a ladle in the basket  to help balance the pole.  Then they set off on their journey.

The High God was delighted at the return of his granddaughter, but horrified to see her husband close on her heels.  Angrily the High God stretched out his hand and drew a line across the sky.  This line became the Milky Way and formed a wide river which the Herd Boy was unable to cross.  So the Herd Boy and his children tried to drain the river, with the ladle and their hands.  What a hopeless task!!  At length, the gods were deeply moved when they saw the Herd Boy and his children trying so desparately to drain the river.  So the High God decided that the Herd Boy could visit his wife once every year on the 7th day of the 7th month of each year.

When the Herd Boy and Weaving Girl met she was so happy that she would sometimes cry and on that night the earth would receive a gentle shower of rain.

Looking up at the sky, you can see a bright star on one side of the Milky Way in the constellation of Vespa, this is the Weaving Girl.  On the other side we see another bright star Aquila, this is the Herd Boy and the two small stars beside it are their children.

There are many versions of this story, maybe you know of one!
