FASHION PASTIMES THEN AND NOW!!

'Who on earth are they?' You're probably asking youself. Well they are relatives of mine, although quite distant. I inherited the photographs along with others. I chose these few to make a comparison of fashion, then and now. I am sure everyone has old photos and I can remember, as a child, looking at them, laughing and saying, "Did people really dress like that!"

I think the time scale ranges from the late l800's to the late 1930's, the last photo I think could be late '40's-'50s.

Whilst most are posed for in a photographers studios, there are some snaps taken in pursuit of some activity or other, like the women's egg and spoon race. Which could be at a school or a fete. As you can see the skirts are long and I should imagine quite cumbersome to really run fast but I suppose with an egg on a spoon perhaps they had to move a bit more sedately in case they lost the egg. Also, judging from the shadows in the picture the sun must have been nearly overhead, and I wonder how hot they must have been, as they appear to be well wrapped up!

Even the photo of the lady sitting in a deckchair, with a child, are clad well enough for winter. Whereas in the next snapshot the two ladies with a small child are paddling in the sea abeit they are still wearing long dresses. The lady who is sitting resting appears to be wearing a much cooler looking dress.
